Communal composition

Since a merging of communes in 1977, Seraing, Ougrée, Jemeppe-sur-Meuse and Boncelles now form a single entity: Seraing.

Seraing covers 548 hectares, distributed as follows:

  • 1/3 housing.
  • 1/3 industries and commerce.
  • 1/3 forest.

Population

On 12/10/2008, Seraing’s population was: 62,252 inhabitants, composed of 29,610 men and 32,642 women.

Height

The town stretches up a hillside from its lowest point (on the Meuse: 60.65 metres above sea level) to the top of the right bank (270 metres), a change in elevation of about 209 metres.

Geology

From the geological point of view, the terrain is irregular, sandy clay. The Meuse Valley was carved through solid layers of coal and in the quaternary period, the river deposited a bed of stony alluvia from ½ to 2 km wide. The slopes and fissures were later covered with wind driven alluvium.
